How to check a KMC registration

The Karnataka Medical Council registers doctors of modern medicine practising in Karnataka and maintains the Karnataka Medical Register. It sits in Vaidyakeeya Bhavan in Vasanthnagar, Bengaluru, and it is the council most Bengaluru hospital doctors on this site are registered with — which makes it the register this site's own verification worker queries most often after Madhya Pradesh.

The council's site states its functions plainly: to maintain the register and keep it updated, to renew registrations, to award CME credit hours, and to act against erring doctors under the Karnataka Medical Registration Act. It does not, at the time of checking, publish a public name-or-number search on its own site; the NMC register is the public search for KMC numbers.

How to check a KMC registration number

1. Open the NMC's Indian Medical Register searchThe Indian Medical Register is the National Medical Commission's public search across every state medical council. It offers five ways in: doctor name, year of registration, registration number, state medical council, and an "advance" search that combines them. Choose State Medical Council and pick "Karnataka Medical Council" from the list, or use the registration number on its own.
2. Match the record, not just the numberA KMC number is unique inside the KMC register, but the same digits exist in other state registers. Confirm that the name on the record is the doctor you are checking and that the year of registration is plausible for their age and qualification. If the number returns a different name, treat the number you were given as wrong until the practice explains it.
3. Check the list of doctors removed from the registerThe NMC also publishes a Black List of doctors whose names have been removed or suspended. A number that searches cleanly on the register can still appear there, so check both.
4. If the record is missing, ask the councilRegisters are not perfectly synchronised. A recent registration, a transfer from another state or a name spelt differently on the certificate can all be missing from the NMC copy. Before concluding anything, ask the KMC office directly with the number and the name as they appear on the certificate.

Practising outside Karnataka

A doctor registered with the KMC is on the Indian Medical Register, and a doctor on that register may practise anywhere in India. Many doctors who move states also take an additional registration with the new state's council, so it is normal to find a doctor practising in Karnataka whose primary number was issued elsewhere, or a KMC-registered doctor practising in another state. What matters for you is that at least one current registration exists and that the doctor's name is not on the removed list.

Renewal and CME credits

KMC registration is renewed periodically, and since 15 April 2022 the council has required six CME credit points for a renewal, with CME programmes approved online only from 1 May of that year. A doctor whose registration has lapsed is still on the register historically but is not in good standing; the council's "good standing" certificate is the document that says both things at once. On this site a registration is shown as verified when the number matches the register; renewal status is not something the public register exposes, so it is not claimed.
