What an MPT means on a doctor's profile
The MPT is the two-year postgraduate physiotherapy degree in a speciality such as orthopaedics, neurology, sports or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy.
The MPT is the postgraduate degree of physiotherapy: two years after the BPT, in a speciality — musculoskeletal or orthopaedic physiotherapy, neurological, cardiopulmonary, sports, paediatric, community or women's health. An MPT holder is a specialist physiotherapist, and in hospitals the MPT is the usual qualification for a senior or teaching post. The MPT does not change the profession's regulatory position: an MPT holder is a physiotherapist, registered where a council exists, and not a medical doctor.
On this site MPT holders are a minority of the physiotherapists, most of whom record a BPT alone. The MPT is worth looking for when the problem is specialised — a sports injury, a stroke, a child with cerebral palsy — because the branch in brackets says what the physiotherapist trained in beyond the general degree.
How to check whether someone holds an MPT
Allied-health qualifications are awarded by universities and recognised, where a statutory body exists, by that body — the Rehabilitation Council of India for the rehabilitation professions, and the state councils being set up under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act for the rest. The awarding university can verify the certificate. On this site these qualifications are marked as supplied until a person has checked them.

- Is an MPT a recognised qualification in India?
- Yes, when awarded by an institution recognised for it. The relevant council maintains the list of recognised qualifications and of the institutions permitted to award each; an MPT from a college that was not recognised for the course in that year is not a recognised qualification, and a registering body can refuse to enter it on the register.
