What an MD (General Medicine) means on a doctor's profile
What MD (General Medicine) is, who awards it, what it qualifies a doctor to do, and how many doctors on this site hold it.
The MD in General Medicine — internal medicine, on newer certificates — is the postgraduate degree of the physician: three years after the MBBS training in the diagnosis and medical (non-surgical) treatment of adult illness, from diabetes and hypertension to infections, heart failure and the undiagnosed. Its holder is a consultant physician, the specialist a general practitioner refers an adult to when the problem is not obviously surgical or organ-specific, and the entry point to the medical super-specialities: cardiology, neurology, nephrology and gastroenterology are all DMs taken after this degree.
It is the most common MD branch on this site by a wide margin. Profiles record it as MD (Medicine), MD (General Medicine) or MD (Internal Medicine), and all three are counted here; "MD Physician" without brackets is a foreign primary degree and is not.

How to check whether a doctor holds an MD (General Medicine)
- Read the register entryA doctor's record on the Indian Medical Register names the qualification the state medical council recorded at registration, and further qualifications where the doctor has had them added. If the doctor says they hold an MD (General Medicine) and the register shows only the primary degree, the MD (General Medicine) has not been registered — which is common and not by itself a warning, but it does mean the register cannot confirm it.
- Check the college was recognised for the courseThe NMC's College and Course Search lists which institutions are recognised for which courses. an MD (General Medicine) from a college not recognised for it on the year in question is a qualification the NMC does not recognise, whatever the certificate says.

The National Medical Commission maintains the list of recognised qualifications and of the institutions permitted to award each; an MD (General Medicine) from a college that was not recognised for the course in that year is not a recognised qualification, and a registering body can refuse to enter it on the register.
