What an FRCS means on a doctor's profile
The FRCS is a surgical qualification of the British and Irish Royal Colleges, recognised in India; it is a fellowship by examination, not a membership.
The FRCS is awarded by examination by the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ireland, and unlike most fellowships on a doctor's letterhead it is a recognised surgical qualification: the FRCS of those colleges appears among the foreign qualifications listed in the Second Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, which the National Medical Commission inherited. An Indian surgeon with an FRCS has typically trained or worked in the United Kingdom or Ireland and sat the colleges' examination; older FRCS certificates were the general surgical fellowship, newer ones are intercollegiate and speciality-specific — FRCS (Orth), FRCS (Urol) and so on.
The FRCS is distinct from the MRCS, the colleges' membership examination taken earlier in training, and from the many Indian fellowships that borrow the word. On this site the FRCS is recorded chiefly on surgeons in the corporate hospitals, and whether it has been checked with the college is stated on each profile.
How to check whether a doctor holds an FRCS
- Read the register entryA doctor's record on the Indian Medical Register names the qualification the state medical council recorded at registration, and further qualifications where the doctor has had them added. If the doctor says they hold an FRCS and the register shows only the primary degree, the FRCS has not been registered — which is common and not by itself a warning, but it does mean the register cannot confirm it.
- Check the college was recognised for the courseThe NMC's College and Course Search lists which institutions are recognised for which courses. This applies to degrees and diplomas; a fellowship or membership awarded by a society is not a course the NMC recognises, and will not appear there.
- Ask the awarding body when it mattersThe society or college that awarded it can confirm a fellowship or membership; that is the only check available, and this site says so on the profile. On this site a qualification is marked verified only when it has been checked against the awarding body and the date is shown; otherwise it is marked as supplied.

- Is an FRCS a recognised medical qualification in India?
- Not in the statutory sense. It is awarded by a college or society rather than a university, and it is not on the schedules of recognised qualifications the National Medical Commission maintains. It may still represent real training or examination; what it cannot do is stand in for a recognised degree or diploma, and on this site it is shown alongside the qualifications, never in place of them.
- Is an FRCS higher than an MS?
- They are different routes to the same thing. The MS is the Indian university postgraduate degree in surgery; the FRCS is the Royal Colleges' examined fellowship, taken after surgical training in the British system. An FRCS holder practising in India registers the qualification with a state medical council as a recognised foreign qualification.
