The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced its new leadership team. Dr Dipak Dhar Choudhury from Uttarakhand has been appointed National President for the 2026-27 term, according to Medical Dialogues.

Dr K.M. Abul Hasan from Tamil Nadu has been named Honorary Secretary General of IMA HQS for 2026-28. Dr Jayesh M Lele has been appointed National President for the 2027-28 term, and Dr Dinesh Goel is Honorary Finance Secretary for 2026-28.

What the new President wants to address

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr Choudhury pointed to the pressure on small clinics. "The small clinics are facing many problems to keep themselves afloat now-a-days," he said, adding that the Clinical Establishment Act needs "better policy formation" so that such clinics can also survive.

He also spoke of the paperwork involved in running a clinic. He said there is a need for single-window registration for all health-related matters, such as Fire NOC and biomedical waste registration, because keeping track of the different registrations is very difficult. He has also asked that proper steps be taken to prevent violence against doctors.

About Dr Dipak Dhar Choudhury

According to Medical Dialogues, Dr Choudhury completed his schooling in Silchar in 1969 and went on to study B.Sc. and MBBS at Gauhati University. In 1987, he opened a clinic in Raipur, Dehradun.

His earlier work includes:

  • Serving as Lead Trainer of the National Family Welfare Programme, training more than 250 doctors.
  • Working as a Master Trainer of the National STI Programme.
  • Serving as State Coordinator of the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI).
  • Being a Founder Life Member of the IMA Blood Bank Society, where he was Honorary Joint Secretary from 2008 to 2013 and has been Honorary Secretary since 2013.

Medical Dialogues also reports that he is credited with laying the roots of the IMA Uttarakhand branch.

The Honorary Secretary General

Dr Abul Hasan completed his MBBS at Thanjavur Medical College, an MS in General Surgery at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and an M.Ch. in Paediatric Surgery at Madras Medical College. He is Correspondent and Secretary of Erode City Central CBSE School, Chithode.

He is National Chairman of IMA HBI and Convenor of the Commonwealth Medical Association Youth Empowerment Initiative. He was President of the IMA Tamil Nadu chapter in 2024 and National Chairman of the Junior Doctors Network, IMA HQ, from 2022 to 2024.

On the concerns facing doctors, Dr Abul Hasan told Medical Dialogues that integrity of each discipline of medicine should be preserved and that mixing them "can be harmful". He also said the government should cap compensation in negligence cases or frame a proper policy for it, and that a central law is needed to prevent assaults on hospitals and doctors.

Why it matters for patients

Small clinics and individual practitioners handle much of everyday care, and the new IMA leadership has put their compliance burden and doctors' safety on the agenda. How these concerns are taken up with policymakers may shape how clinics operate in India.
